Brenda Varela is a new second-grade teacher in Long Beach, and she said she might not have gotten there without the support of SkillsetGroup.

“Business is not my thing – I wanted to go to school for teaching,” Varela said, recalling her first job at SkillsetGroup as a payroll assistant and receptionist. “Clint and Jose (the CEO and CMO) would ask about career prospects, and sometimes helped pay for books. I even left SkillsetGroup and went back again for a summer job.”
SkillsetGroup was Varela’s lifeline as she completed her teaching degree in special education at CalState Long Beach.
“There were always people ready to help me grow in my career,” she said
Varela spent the last few weeks of August getting her lesson plans and classroom together, where she’ll be co-teaching with another professional. School at Long Beach Unified starts Wednesday.
Though starting a new endeavor can be nerve-wracking, Brenda feels secure and prepared. That’s because, with SkillsetGroup’s help, Brenda worked hard to develop the self discipline, communication skills and comfort in a professional environment necessary for success.
“I learned a lot from SkillsetGroup, even though it wasn’t the field I was interested in – how to work with others and collaborate,” Varela said. “If I was willing to put in the work, myself, they were always willing to help.”
