SkillsetGroup staffing and consulting firm’s top-performing sales executive Lupita Baca celebrates her fifth anniversary with the company this summer, and she already has great advice for her colleagues.
“Be organized, and be yourself,” said the staffing wunderkind who spends her time setting up mutually lucrative partnerships between SkillsetGroup and Southern California businesses. “This job is about building relationships. People who run companies are usually sharp negotiators. This means they expect you to have relevant info at your fingertips, and they can tell if you’re not being authentic.”
Lupita started at SkillsetGroup at 22 as an office administrator, and she was such an effective and conscientious employee, CEO Clint Armstrong asked if she wanted to try her hand as a sales executive.
“I was the second female at the company,” Lupita recalled; she joined the team in August of 2016 when SkillsetGroup was only three years old. “I started off in admin, doing background checks and onboarding.”
Lupita said she was nervous starting in sales at first. She was young and struggled with shyness, she said. And though Lupita has always felt welcome in SkillsetGroup's work family, selling business services as a woman in male-dominated industries was a little intimidating, especially given SkillsetGroup’s high-level focus on engineering, technical, and leadership talent.
“It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be – it was super difficult breaking out of my comfort zone,” she said. “But once I landed my first sale and understood what that accomplishment felt like, I knew I had made the right move for my career.”
Clint said SkillsetGroup searches out passionate, high-performing sales executives like Lupita who may need nothing other than a chance from management to show their full potential.
“The story of Lupita’s career with SkillsetGroup demonstrates the success you achieve when you focus on building a culture of retention,” Armstrong said. “If we had hired someone with staffing sales experience from outside instead of promoting Lupita, we may never have tapped her full potential to grow our business.”
